Google Page Experience

How Page Experience will affect your SEO ranking.

By May 2021 Google will be updating its algorithm to include a new factor, named Page Experience. Page Experience will focus on your existing Google Search signals such as mobile-friendliness, safe-browsing, HTTPS, and intrusive interstitial guidelines and will include your metrics in Google’s Web Vitals (loading performance, visual stability and interactivity of the page).

Whilst content is still the most significant factor with Google maintaining that “great page experience doesn’t override having great page content”, it is also highlighted that “in cases where there are many pages that may be similar in relevance, page experience can be much more important for visibility in Search.”

Page Experience signals.

Page Experience signals are crucial to delivering optimum page experience in Google Search. The Core Web Vitals focuses on your sites loading speed, visual stability and interactivity with the following metrics focused on:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) will measure your sites loading performance. Sites should aim to have LCP occur with the first 2.5 seconds of the page starting to load.
  • First Input Delay (FID) will measure your sites interactivity.  Your site should aim to have an FID of less than 100 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) will measure against your sites visual stability and sites should strive to have a CLS score of less than 0.1.

Core Web Vitals are going to be determinative on your SEO rankings, so it is critical to ensure your page experience is not affected by underperforming plug-ins or other third-party software.

Cookies and Page Experience.

With the changes to the Google algorithm targeting page load speeds, having any third-party code on your site that hasn’t been designed to be performant will affect your SEO rankings. Cookie banners are prevalent however many have not been designed and built in an efficient manner. Whilst they may work, the impact they may have on your SEO rankings could be costly to your marketing efforts.
